Skincare Tips From Your Personal Trainer

I am by no means a skincare expert, but our skin is our largest organ and it must be cared for as well! My skin gets beat up daily, whether I am sweating it out at the gym, going for a long run in the sun or just daily toxins and exposure. That being said, many often ask about my skincare routine so I decided to compile a list of some of my best skincare tips for active individuals and at the gym!

My top tip for better skin: drink water! I can't even imagine what my skin would look like if I didn't drink water! I can really see a difference in my skin depending on how much I’ve had to drink that day. I truly believe that the quickest and easiest thing you can do to improve your skin is to stay hydrated. A tip is keep a large re-usable water bottle with you at all times.

Tip: wear sunscreen! We all know how damaging the sun can be for our skin, especially if you are an active individual and love to be outside! This is something I wish I had gotten in the habit of even earlier. Getting into the habit of wearing sunscreen, or moisturizer with SPF, can help to protect your skin from harmful UV exposure and fight against skin damage.

Tip: A healthy outside starts inside! I am a huge believer that healthy skin starts from the inside. We really are what we eat, and what we put into our bodies can be a reflection of what we see on the outside. So, to keep your skin glowing I would recommend eating fresh, healthy foods. There are so many nutrient rich foods like salmon, blueberries, and spinach that all hold amazing properties like antioxidants and vitamins, which can have a positive effect on our skin.

Tip: Wash your face! This is an essential part of my routine. I remember the days in high school when I wouldn't wash my face... oh how that makes me cringe now! I cleanse my face twice morning and night to remove any makeup, dirt or excess oil that could affect my skin. I usually follow cleansing with serum then moisturizer.

GYM SKIN. As a personal trainer, the best skincare advice I can share is how to look after your skin while you are at the gym. The gym can hold all sorts of nasty germs, so we want to make sure we're being mindful for ourselves, as well as others. Some gym skin tips: do not touch your skin at the gym, especially your face, until you have washed your hands. Gym equipment is a breeding ground for bacteria, and not everyone wipes down the equipment when they are done. So by taking this precaution you can protect against illness and breakouts. Also, to be extra cautious, wipe down equipment PRIOR to use as well. Another tip, bring hand sanitizer to the gym. Keep it in your bag to use during and after your workout. Imagine the countless members who have touched every and anything! And if you are taking classes or do exercises that require a mat, bring your own if possible, or wipe down the mat prior to use. As stated previously, be sure to stay hydrated and replenish your body with the proper fuel and electrolytes to keep your skin fresh.

I hope these skin tips help you! Again, I have to stress, I am no skincare expert, I am just a personal trainer! These tips are just from my own personal experience and what works for me. Staying hydrated and eating fresh, healthy foods will not only positively impact your skin, but can also help you to get better results from your workout routine. As you continue to track your fitness progress, you’ll see changes in how you feel too! I believe that when you feel more confident, eat healthy foods and get plenty of fresh air, this can have a positive effect on your overall wellbeing!
